Linux is the Operating System commonly associated with Free Software. Most of the Software listed hereunder run under Linux, MacOsX and Windoze. Anyway, as stated in the overview, a lot of research-oriented tools are not necessarily developed for Linux (and are not Free either). It is of course possible to run such non-free software on Linux by simulating the behaviour of Windoze.
The Free - thus more satisfactory - projects listed here shoud be useful to researchers in human and social sciences needing Free tools but not willing to program a whole software by him/herself.
